The cleanest natural gas power plant in the country For more than 100 years, the City of Vernon has served as an industrial and economic resource for surrounding communities in Southern California. Devoted almost entirely to industry, Vernon's businesses provide jobs for 50,000 people, many who live in diverse adjacent communities including Bell, Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Huntington Park and Maywood. Our police and fire departments provide back-up protection to neighboring cities. Now, the City of Vernon is building the cleanest natural gas power plant in the country. This new clean energy project will deliver a clean, reliable and safe supply of electricity to support the existing and new job-creating businesses, homes and schools in the Southeast Region. The proposed project will create hundreds of high-quality construction jobs for residents of local communities while it is being built. Vernon is also committed to purchasing supplies locally, with a local direct benefit of approximately $50 million. Further, the wages generated by the project for these workers amount to $90 million. With the Southeast Region Energy Project comes a multi-million dollar community benefits program for the residents living in neighborhoods surrounding Vernon, including Bell, Bell Gardens, Boyle Heights, Commerce, Maywood and Huntington Park.
